The end of 2011 was pivotal for my bullying prevention programs. A series of serendipitous events all connected and sparked the ignition of a brand new musical focused on a message of hope for kids who might be considering taking their own lives in reaction to being bullied.
It started when the director the recent Orange County production of “Letters To Daddy”, Terry Odell of The Acting Out Playhouse reached out to me and expressed an interest in some kind of future collaboration…
Then I got a chance to experience an assembly by Bullying Prevention Speaker, Mike Donahue which totally blew me away because of his honest “realness” with the kids.
One of the symbols Mike Donahue used in his program was shoes. He invited the students to “walk in the shoes” of each person he shared a story about…
While Mike’s program was enthralling, it was totally different from how I approach assemblies. The intention is the same, the way we do what we do is different. He used PowerPoint and hip hop, I use original songs and storytelling. That’s fine.
What Terry Odell and I decided was that with teen actors, we would have even more of a chance of getting some of the empowering tools and techniques I teach into kids’ awareness.
So I invite you to check it out and if you can see it in your heart to support the project in any way that would be awesome!
